Ningbo, near Shanghai and Hangzhou, is located in the middle of the coastline of Chinese mainland and southern wing of developed Yangtz River Delta. It is an open city specifically designated in the state plan, which enjoys provincial-level economic administration right. It is also a major city which has the right to formulate the local regulations and rules. Ningbo is one of the famous historical and cultural cities, which covers an area of 9,365 square kilometres with a population of 5,520,000.

Ningbo is the home to Hemudu relics with more than 7,000 years history of civilization. It has been an important port for international trade since ancient time. During the Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty, Ningbo was one of the three main ports for international trade. After the Opium War, it became one of the five commercial ports open to the world. Nowadays, Ningbo port is still one of the most important ports in China, whose turnover volume reached 226 million tons and total handled containers reached 4 million in 2004. It ranked the second among the Chinese mainland ports.

Ningbo has very good conditions for economic development. Its economy has been developing fast since the reform and opening. In 2004, the GDP in Ningbo reached RMB 215.8 billion, the GDP per capita surpassed USD 4,000, financial revenue reached RMB 40 billion, the disposable income per capita in urban area reached RMB 15,882 and per capita net income of rural area reached RMB 7,018. Currently, Ningbo is an important industrial city and international port in east China, a core city and heavy industrial base in the Yangtze River delta and the economic center in Zhejiang Province. The climate in Ningbo is very pleasant with remarkable four seasons. The mountains and rivers in Ningbo are nice and there are many landscapes so that Ningbo is an ideal place for tourism.

Ningbo has great potential for further development. It has been predicted that in 2010, Ningbo will become an international modern port city that is strong in economy, open, and developed in science and culture ,citizens of which will be very wealthy and healthy with good social order.
